LINAC Service Contract Check
A flat percent of list price is the same number whether the machine is two years old or twelve. What it costs to service the machine is not. This calculator projects the difference over the years left on your contract, using Medsolve's service-cost assumptions, which are informed by published research and which you can edit.
The result is a modeled gap, not a savings estimate. It is the size of the conversation to have with the vendor. How the model works, what it leaves out, and where the assumptions come from are explained below the calculator. Everything you enter stays in your browser.
How the number is built. Your annual service cost is projected across the remaining term. For each year, the model applies a service-cost factor by machine age (the editable curve in the assumptions panel) to estimate what the machine costs to service, and the gap is the difference between what you pay and that estimate, summed over the term and multiplied by the number of machines on the same rate. The range applies the plus-or-minus band you set to the curve.
Where the assumptions come from. The curve, the band and the 5 to 9 percent “typical” band are Medsolve's assumptions. They are anchored to one published study: Carlone et al., Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, 2024 (DOI 10.1002/acm2.14246), which measured a service cost ratio of 3.13 percent of capital cost for in-house maintenance of 31 Varian LINACs across six BC Cancer centers over 675 days, software support excluded, with labor about two thirds of the cost. The same paper notes vendor service contracts are believed to run 6 to 7 percent of equipment cost. The study does not validate the age curve used in this calculator; the curve is Medsolve's, and that is why it is editable.
What it does not price. Software and AI licenses bundled into the contract, uptime guarantees, parts lead time, the cost of the downtime itself, and the parts inventory, engineer coverage and risk a vendor carries that an in-house cost figure does not. The second tab estimates lost throughput separately.
